"October was Domestic Violence Awareness Month. I am a survivor.

It took me a long time to come to terms with the fact that I was in an abusive relationship. I lived in denial for so long. I made excuses. I tried everything to get him to “change” (I now know that my efforts were completely futile). I was in full blown survival mode for years, doing whatever I could to keep myself and my kids safe.

I finally gathered up enough courage to leave, fearing for my safety and the safety of my children, and not knowing what the future held for us. It was the most terrifying day of my life.

Even though the journey has been extremely difficult (that’s an understatement), I know I made the right decision for me and my kids.

We still have a long way to go when it comes to domestic violence awareness in this country. If I’m being completely honest, the entire system is broken. I have lost count of the number of times I have been accused of making up the abuse, blamed for not leaving earlier, told the abuse wasn’t “real” abuse.

Nobody should ever fear for their lives.

Nobody should ever feel worthless.

Nobody should ever feel scared in their own home.

Love shouldn’t hurt. Not ever.

If you are in an abusive relationship, please get out. I know that it’s hard, and it will most likely get worse before it gets better, but trust me, it is worth it.

My heart goes out to anybody else who has also lived this nightmare. I wouldn’t wish this pain on anybody. But know, you are not alone"
